akai mpc 1.4 64 bit 1The latest update to the MPC Software, version 1.4, includes 64-bit support for PC/Mac. The standalone application, VST and Audio Unit plugins now have 64-bit versions. These updated 64-bit plugin versions will now load in supported 64-Bit DAW's. If you are running the 64-bit version of the MPC Standalone or Plugin one of the first differences you may notice is that some 3rd party plugins that were previously available in the 32-bit version are no longer available. In this overview, we'll cover how to run the 64 and 32 bit versions of the MPC Software and Plugin , and  review what 3rd party plugins will be available depending on the bit type version of MPC Software you are running.

MPC Standalone: How to launch and confirm the 32 and 64 Bit versions

On a 32-bit Windows computer, after you have installed MPC Software version 1.4, you will receive 1 standalone version of the MPC Software. Additional 64 bit related versions will not install. Launch this single standalone version from the launch icon on your desktop, start menu or from MPC.exe file located in C:\Program Files (x86)\Akai Pro\MPC.

On a 64-bit Windows computer, after you have installed MPC Software version 1.4, you will receive 2 standalone versions of the MPC Software. During installation, if you selected the option to create a desktop icon(see below) you will find that there is only one application to start from your desktop.

The MPC Standalone Software Shortcut that is on your desktop will only run the 64 bit version of the Standalone MPC Software. I recommend renaming this shortcut(see below) if you plan to run the 32-bit version, too. Alternatively, the 64-bit MPC Standalone Software can be launched from the MPC.exe located in C:\Program Files\Akai Pro\MPC

On a Windows computer, to run the 32-bit version of the Standalone MPC Software navigate to C:\Program Files (x86)\Akai Pro\MPC. In this location you'll find a file titled MPC.exe. This icon launches the 32-Bit MPC Standalone Software. If you're planing on using this 32-bit version, I recommend creating a shortcut and renaming the copy(see below).

To locate version information about your currently running project navigate to the Help > About menu in the MPC Software Standalone Software. Observe a listing in the lower left corner for the version and bit type currently running. In the following photo you'll see a notice that  that indicates version 1.4, 64-bit is running.

MPC Plugin: How to launch and confirm the 32 and 64 Bit versions

On a 32-bit Windows computer, after you have installed MPC Software version 1.4, you will receive 1 Plugin bit type version of the MPC Software. Additional 64 bit related versions will not install.

Users can find the plugin available as VST, and RTAS.

By default the 32-Bit MPC Plugin VST will found in the following location:

  • VST: C:\Program Files (x86)\Steinberg\vstplugins

On a 64-bit Windows computer, after you have installed MPC Software version 1.4, you will receive up to 2 Plugin bit type versions of the MPC Software. Which versions install depends on the options selected in the installation process. The follow image shows options selected to install both the 32 and 64 bit versions of the MPC Plugin.

Users can will the plugin available as VST in supported 32 and 64-bit DAW's.

Knowing these locations is important! In most cases when new audio plugins are introduced to a host DAW, a scan of the location that various plugins live in must be performed. MPC Plugin: How to launch and confirm the 32 and 64 Bit versions

On a Mac, the supported OSX operating system versions are a hybrid of 32 and 64 bit architecture. For this reason, after you have installed the MPC Software Update, you will receive 1 plugin version of the MPC Software.

Users will find the plugin available as VST, AU, and RTAS in supported 32 and 64-bit DAW's.

By default the plugins will be found in the following locations:

  • VST: Mac HD > Library > Audio > Plug-ins > VST
  • AU: Mac HD > Library > Audio > Plug-ins > Components
  • RTAS: Library > Application Support > Digidesign > Plug-ins

Knowing these locations is important! In most cases when new audio plugins are introduced to a host DAW, a scan of the location that various plugins live in must be performed. When the MPC Software Plugin is launched within a host, the version and bit type can also be reviewed by opening the Help > About menu.

MPC Software: Using 32 and 64 bit 3rd Party Plugins

At this point in your ownership of an MPC Renaissance or MPC Studio you probably have several projects saved, and many of those projects will contain plugins. Some of these plugins in your projects may be the Akai Virtual Instrument Expansions, and Effects, and some may be 3rd party plugins. After you have installed all updates included with version 1.4, all Akai Professional Plugins that have been included with the MPC Software since version 1, like the Bank, Wub, Noise, 809, and effects, will all load from previous projects into a 64 bit instance of the MPC Software. 32-bit 3rd party plugins, saved in MPC Projects, and used in versions of the MPC Software prior to 1.4 will recall in a 64-bit instance of the MPC Software if you have a 64-bit version of the 3rd Party Plugin scanned. If you receive a message that a plugin cannot be found, or you don't see a plugin in the MPC Software's list, navigate to Preferences > Plugins and re-scan the location where your 64-bit plugins live. To summarize, a 32-bit version of the MPC Software will load only 32-bit plugins, and the 64-bit version will only load 64-bit plugins. If you find that some of the plugins installed on your computer are only 32-bit versions take a look at the plugin manufacturer's website to see if a 64-bit option is available. Most times you will find that a 64-bit version is available. There are some 3rd party applications that help bridge using 32-bit plugins in a 64-bit application, but often times using these will sacrifice features and functions of the plugins. We'll explore these plugin bridge applications in a future article.
