Hardware

Is the MPK2 series controller compatible with my Windows or Mac computer?

Yes!  The Akai MPK2 series controllers are class-compliant meaning that they are plug-and-play and do not require a specific driver download in order to function.  The MPK2 series controllers will function on Windows XP, Windows Vista, Windows 7 and Windows 8 as well as all Mac operating systems that are 10.4.11 and above.  Also, because they are class-compliant, they will continue to function as Windows and Apple come out with later updates and operating systems.

 

Do I need a power supply?

The Akai MPK2 Series controllers are USB hub-powered and do not require a power supply.  If you would like to purchase a power supply, they can be powered with a 6V, 1A, center-positive, auto-switching power supply.  By connecting a power supply, the MPK2 Series controller will draw power from the wall adapter only and bypass obtaining power from the USB port. 

The Akai Professional part number for a compatible power supply is MP6-1 and you can order one by contacting Akai Professional Technical Support.
 

 

How do I reset my MPK2 controller to Factory Default settings?

The MPK2 series controller allows the user to reset either or both the factory Presets and the factory Global settings.  To do so:

 

      1. Press Preset to enter Preset Mode.
         
      2. Press the Left Cursor button so Factory Settings appears in the display.
         
      3. Turn the Value Dial and select Presets or Globals depending on the settings you want to restore.

      4. To restore the MPK2 series controller to it's factory default Presets or Globals settings (which overwrite those previously saved), press the Value Dial.  To cancel this operation, before pressing the Value Dial, press Preset.
         

 

How do I change the color of my pads?

    1. Power on the MPK2 series controller, press the PRESET button and use the Value Dial to scroll to the preset of choice.

    2. Press the EDIT button and strike the pad you want to adjust.  You will see the name of the trigger you strike in the upper left corner of the screen.

    3. Press the Right Arrow button once to view the color settings for that specific pad.

      Use the Down Arrow button to highlight Off Color.  Use the Value Dial to adjust the color of the pad when it is not being struck.  Similarly, adjust the On Color option to change the color of the pad when it is being struck.

    4. Adjust all of the pads of your choice as suggested above.  Once you have adjusted the colors to your satisfaction, press the PRESET button. Press the Right Arrow one time.  Choose the preset location you want to save to.  Press the PUSH TO ENTER button to save your settings.

Computer/Software Setup
 

Can I use the MPK2 controller with my iPad?

Yes!  To compensate for the lower power coming from an iPad, the MPK2 series controller has the option to run in a low-power mode.

To use the MPK2 series device to control an app on an iOS device, connect the MPK2 series controller to an iOS device using an Apple iPad Camera Connection Kit (sold separately), and power on the MPK2 controller while holding down the Preview button.  In low-power mode, the pads do not light up and the LED screen runs in a lower-light format.

 

 

Are the MPK2 series controllers supported on Windows 8 and Mac 10.9 operating systems?

Yes!  The MPK2 series controllers are class-compliant devices and do not require specific dedicated drivers in order to function correctly.  Simply plug-and-play!

1.25 GHz G4/G5 or faster (Intel Mac recommended)
1 GB RAM (2 GB recommended)
Mac OS X 10.4.11 (10.5 or later recommended)

Windows:
1.5 GHz Pentium 4 or Celeron compatible CPU or faster (multicore CPU recommended)
1 GB RAM (2 GB recommended)
Windows 8, Windows 7, Windows Vista or Windows XP
Windows compatible sound card (ASIO driver support recommended)
QuickTime recommended

Where do I get the included software?

    1. Go to http://www.akaipro.com/
    2. Scroll all the way to the bottom and Login to your Akai Pro account.  If you do not have an account, Create one. 
    3. Once you have logged in or created your Akai Professional user account, choose Register a Product.
    4. Enter the requested information to Register your MPK2 series controller and press Submit.

    5. Once you have Registered your MPK2 Series controller, you can now find the downloads for the various included software within the My Account section.
       

 

I get a Keyboard Setup Assistant message when I power on my keyboard. What do I do?

The MPK2 series controllers are read as an ANSI keyboard.  The first time you connect the MPK2 series controller to your computer, you will see a Keyboard Setup Assistant message saying that your keyboard cannot be identified.  Do not click Continue.  Instead, close the window by clicking the circle in the upper-left corner.  If you do press Continue, simply close the window at any point

If you see another window asking you to select your type of keyboard, select ANSI (United States and others) and click Done.
 

 

Troubleshooting

 

My pads won't stop firing. What can I do?

The MPK2 series controller allows for the ability to adjust pad trigger settings depending on playing style.  However, sometimes those adjustments allow the controller to be overly sensitive to very slight vibrations. You may experience a pad or multiple pads that trigger and light up when you strike it - and continues to trigger and stay lit after you finish striking it. This is typically easily remedied.

      1. Press the GLOBAL button.

      2. Press the Right Arrow button until the top of the screen reads Pads.  Adjust the Pad Threshold setting to 02 or higher.

      3. Press the Right Arrow button until the screen reads Save Globals.  Press the PUSH TO ENTER knob to save the Global settings.

My MPK2 controller is not connecting to my computer. What's wrong?

If your MPK2 is not connecting to your computer or controlling your software, it is highly likely that your symptoms can be resolved by adjusting some settings in your software or connections to your computer.  The simplest first steps to take in order to determine the cause would be the following:

      • Try connecting to a different USB port on the computer.
      • Try using an alternate USB cable.
      • Try connecting to a different computer to determine if the cause is hardware or computer related.

I am having trouble with my controller.  Should I update/reinstall the firmware?

No.  The feature set of the MPD and MPK products generally will not change over time via Firmware updates, and reinstalling the firmware is not recommended as a troubleshooting method for any specific difficulty.

The following symptoms can generally be resolved without the need for repair service or installing firmware.

        • Doesn't connect to a computer
        • Doesn't control software at all
        • Controls don't map correctly to software
        • I'm experiencing high latency
