Akai MPK2 Series - Setup in PreSonus Studio One

The Akai MPK2 series controllers combine deep software integration, enhanced workflow, and core technologies from the iconic line of MPC workstations.  The MPK225, MPK249, and MPK261 are engineered to be all-in-one controller solutions for comprehensive interfacing and manipulation of virtual instruments, effect plugins, DAWs, and more.  This articles walks through how to setup the MPK2 series controller with PreSonus Studio One.

MPK2 Series Hardware Setup

 

  1. First, connect the Akai MPK2 series controller to an available USB port on your computer using the supplied cable and power the controller on.
     
  2. Press the PRESET button and use the data dial to scroll to Preset: 8 Studio 1. Press the PUSH TO ENTER knob.

    Note: The presets, preset names, and order of presets may vary depending on the specific model.

  3. Press the GLOBAL button to enter the Global settings menu. Press the right arrow key until the display reads Clock Source:   Use the rotary knob to select External.

  4. Hit the right arrow key until the display reads Save Globals.  Press the PUSH TO ENTER knob to save the settings.  The display will flash .  When this is complete, the display will read .

  5. Press the PRESET button to return to the Studio Ones preset screen.

PreSonus Studio One Software Setup
  1. Open PreSonus Studio One.  Choose Create a new Song.

  2. In the New Song window that opens, choose a Style.  For the purposes of this tutorial, choose Empty Song and press OK.

  3. From the top menu bar, choose Studio One > Options...

  4. In the window that opens, choose the External Devices tab, then click on the Add... button.

  5. The Add Device window will open.  In the left column, choose AKAI and then choose MPK49/61/88.
     
    • The MPK2 series controllers are backward compatible with the original MPK series controllers when using PreSonus Studio One, with the following additional features:
      • Pad Bank A is mapped to Impact2
      • Use the DAW CONTROL Up and Down buttons to move up and down between different tracks

  6. Also within Add Device window, change the Device Name to your MPK2 series controller, click on the drop-down menu next to Receive From and choose the MPK2 series controller from the lists, and leave the Send To drop-down menu on None.  Then press OK.

  7. In the Options window, you will now see the MPK2 series controller listed.  Create a second device by clicking on Add...

  8. In the window that opens, choose New Instrument, change the Device Name to your MPK2 series controller, set the Send To drop-down menu to the MPK2 series controller, and put a check in the boxes next to Send MIDI Clock and Use MIDI Clock Start.  Press OK.

  9. Press OK in the Options window.

Virtual Instruments and Plugins
 

Adjusting the Studio One Plugin Sources

Note for Windows users only: If you have difficulty locating a plugin within the PreSonus Studio One software, be sure Studio One is reading plugins from the correct location where your plugins are installed. To do this:

    1. From the top menu toolbar in Studio One, choose Studio One > Options...

    2. At the top of the window that opens, choose Locations, then click on the VST Plug-Ins tab.

    3. To add a new location for Studio One to read VST plugins from, choose Add...  In the window that opens, browse to the location of your installed VST plugins and press OK.

    4. The new location will now be listed in the Locations area in the Options window.  Press Apply and then press OK.

AIR Hybrid 3 Default Installation Locations:

Windows:
32-bit: C:\Program Files (x86)\VstPlugins\
64-bit: C:\Program Files\vstplugins

Mac:
(AU): Macintosh HD > Library > Audio > Plugins > Components
(VST): Macintosh HD > Library > Audio > Plugins > VST


SONiVOX Twist 2 Default Installation Locations:

Windows:
32-bit: C:\Program Files (x86)\SONiVOX\VstPlugins\
64-bit: C:\Program Files\vstplugins

Mac:
(AU): Macintosh HD > Library > Audio > Plugins > Components

AIR Hybrid 3 Setup
 
Hardware Setup 

Press the PRESET button and use the data dial to scroll to Preset: 3 Hybrid.  Press the PUSH TO ENTER knob.

Software Setup
    1.  In the left column of the main Studio One window, click on the akai mpk2 studioone hybrid 1a button and the Add Tracks window will open.  Change the Count to 1, the Type to Instrument and choose New Instrument next to Output.  Do not press OK yet.

    2. Now, also in the Add Tracks window, click on the bottom drop-down menu under Output and locate and click on Hybrid (or Hybrid_x64 if you are running the 64-bit version of Studio One) to load it into the Add Tracks window.

    3. Press OK to create a new instrument track in Studio One with Hybrid loaded to it.

    4. In the track that opens, click on the Instrument Editor button to view the Hybrid 3 interface.

SONiVOX Twist 2 Setup
 
Hardware Setup

Press the PRESET button and use the data dial to scroll to Preset: 4 Twist 2.  Press the PUSH TO ENTER knob.

Software Setup
    1. In the left column of the main Studio One window, click on the akai mpk2 studioone hybrid 1a button and the Add Tracks window will open.  Change the Count to 1, the Type to Instrument and choose New Instrument next to Output.  Do not press OK yet.

    2. Now, also in the Add Tracks window, click on the bottom drop-down menu under Output and locate and click on Twist 2 (or Twist 2_x64 if you are running the 64-bit version of Studio One) to load it into the Add Tracks window.

    3. Press OK to create a new instrument track in Studio One with Twist 2 loaded to it.

    4. In the track that opens, click on the Instrument Editor button to view the Twist 2 interface.

SONiVOX Eighty Eight Ensemble 2 Setup

Hardware Setup

Press the PRESET button and use the data dial to scroll to Preset: 5 Eighty8.  Press the PUSH TO ENTER knob.

Software Setup
 
    1. In the left column of the main Studio One window, click on the akai mpk2 studioone hybrid 1a button and the Add Tracks window will open.  Change the Count to 1, the Type to Instrument and choose New Instrument next to Output.  Do not press OK yet.

    2. Now, also in the Add Tracks window, click on the bottom drop-down menu under Output and locate and click on EightyEight 2 (or EightyEight 2_x64 if you are running the 64-bit version of Studio One) to load it into the Add Tracks window.

    3. Press OK to create a new instrument track in Studio One with EightyEight 2 loaded to it.

    4. In the track that opens, click on the Instrument Editor button to view the Eighty Eight Ensemble 2 interface.
