akai amx mainA powerful controller for any performer, AMX controls 2 decks of Serato DJ with an intuitive array of faders, touch-activated knobs, and buttons.  At the very heart of the AMX is the Innofader crossfader which offers unparalleled levels of quality and durability that you just don't find in other crossfaders.  In the rare case that it becomes necessary to calibrate Innofader, this guide walks through the process step-by-step.

Before You Begin

In most cases, the calibration process described below is both unnecessary and not a process most users will ever have to perform.

The only time this process should be considered is if you are experiencing a 'bleeding' of channels.  For example, if you have the crossfader set all the way to the left and you can still hear audio from both channels simultaneously.

However, as it is very rare that this symptom is caused by the Innofader, we highly recommend ensuring that your settings are correct prior to attempting to calibrate it, as following this process will not lead to an improved performance, and could in fact damage the fader if not performed correctly.

Note:  The following calibration process is not part of the typical user experience and is not necessary nor recommended in most situations.  If you are not experiencing the specific symptoms described above, do not follow the calibration procedure below.  It will not improve performance and could ultimately lead to further difficulties.

Important: Keep all hands, body parts, and conductive metals far away from any exposed circuitry - especially all of the sensitive circuitry left of the calibration button - during the entire calibration process.

Ensure the Settings are Correct

As mentioned above, calibrating the Innofader is not part of the typical user experience and we do not typically recommend following this process as most often the calibration process is unnecessary and can in fact damage the crossfader if it is performed incorrectly.

To ensure that your symptoms are hardware related and cannot be remedied without calibrating the Innofader, follow the steps suggested below:

  1. Connect the Akai Professional AMX to your computer with the included USB cable.  If you are on a Windows operating system, ensure that you have previously downloaded and installed the Windows driver linked here.

  2. Open Serato DJ.  Click on the SETUP button to enter the preferences window.

  3. Click on the MIXER tab.

  4. Note: There are a number of settings you can choose here to adjust the fader to your desired functionality.  For example, to set the fader so that there is a smooth transition where one channel fades out as the other fades in:

In the CROSSFADER section, ensure that the Power option is chosen.

As another example, if you are a scratch DJ and looking for a rough cut, set the CROSSFADER to Linear and adjust the XFADE CURVE to your desired setting.

  5. On the AMX, adjust the XFADE CURVE knob to taste.  For a centered, smooth fade, we recommend setting it about halfway or so (12 o'clock).

With the settings as suggested above, when the Innofader is set to the far left or far right, only a single channel will be heard.  If this is working as described, do not calibrate your Innofader.

Calibrating the Innofader

Note:  The following calibration process is not part of the typical user experience and is not necessary nor recommended in most situations.  If you are not experiencing the specific symptoms described above, do not follow the calibration procedure below.  It will not improve performance and could ultimately lead to further difficulties.

Important: Keep all hands, body parts, and conductive metals far away from any exposed circuitry - especially all of the sensitive circuitry left of the calibration button - during the entire calibration process.

  1. Disconnect the AMX from the USB cable so that no power is getting to the unit.

  2. Remove the two outside hex screws from either end of the fader plate, remove the Innofader and turn it upside down but do not disconnect the individual wires underneath.

Important: Keep all hands, body parts, and conductive metal objects far away from circuitry - especially all of the sensitive circuitry left of the calibration button - during the entire calibration process.

  3. Move the fader all the way to the right.

  4. Connect the USB cable to the AMX to provide power to the unit.

  5. Gradually move the fader from the far right to the far left and then stop. It should take a minimum of 1/2 second to move from the right end to the left end. Slow movement improves curve accuracy.

  6. Press and hold the calibration button for at least 1/4 second before releasing.

  7. Gradually move the fader stem from the far left to the far right and then stop. It should take a minimum of 1/2 second to move from the left end to the right end. Slow movement improves curve accuracy.

  8. Press and hold the calibration button for at least 1/4 second before releasing.

  9. Once the calibration is completed, disconnect the USB cable and insert and screw the Innofader back into the AMX.

That's it!
