The MPD226 and MPD232 are USB/MIDI pad controllers perfect for producers, programmers, musicians and DJ's alike.  This article provides presets, mapping files and instructions to map your MPD226 or MPD232 out to Cubase.





Getting Started

For your convenience, we've put together a mapping (XML) file to automatically connect the faders, knobs and switches to mixer functions in Cubase. Start by downloading the file below:

Keep in mind, this will come in a zipped folder. Please make sure to properly unzip the folder before using any of the files inside.

Preset for MPD226

If you are an MPD232 user, please skip to the Transport and Sync Section.

You will notice that inside the MPD2_Cubase folder, there is a preset file for the MPD226 to allow it to share the same mapping with the MPD232. If you are an MPD226 user, download and install the preset editor and follow the instructions below to load your new preset file:

  1. Connect your MPD226 to a USB port on your computer and power it on.
  2. Close all other Audio/MIDI software, including Cubase, and launch the editor.
  3. From the top left of the editor window, select File > Open Preset.
  4. In the window that opens, locate the MPD2_Cubase folder and select the MPD226_Cubase2 file. A new window will appear.

  5. In the new window, select File > Send to Hardware.

  6. If asked to select your MIDI ports, choose MPD226 in the Output section (This may be labeled as Port A depending on your operating system). Click Apply and OK.
  7. Choose a preset location on the MPD226 where your Cubase preset will be stored. It's recommended to choose preset 10 to overwrite the existing Cubase preset, though you are free to choose one of the generic presets (14-20) to avoid overwriting anything. Click Send.
  8. Use the scroll knob on the MPD226 to scroll to your new preset number and push the knob in to select the preset. If you were already on the preset number, select a different preset and then go back to the Cubase preset and select it again to load it into the RAM.


Transport and Sync

On your MPD226 or 232:

  1. Select your Cubase preset.
  2. Press the EDIT button and then press the PLAY button.
  3. Use the Data Dial to change the Transport Type to MMC/MIDI.
  4. Press the GLOBAL button and use the right arrow to scroll over to Clock Source.
  5. Use the Data Dial to change the Clock Source to External.* This will allow your MPD to follow the clock in Cubase to sync with your project.
  6. To save your changes, use the right arrow to scroll over to the SAVE GLOBALS page and press down on the data dial to store. *Keep in mind, that when the clock source is set to External, time-based functions like note repeat and sequencers will wait for a clock signal before they will do anything. In this case, make sure that Cubase is actively playing back in order to send clock to the MPD and utilize the note repeat or sequencer.

In Cubase:

  1. Go to the Transport menu and select Project Synchronization Setup...
  2. Under Machine Control Input you'll see a drop-down menu for MMC Input. Use this to select the MPD226 or MPD232 port. This will enable the transport.
  3. Under MIDI Clock Destinations, check off the MPD226 or MPD232 port. Now Cubase will send clock signal to your MPD to keep the note repeat in time and/or sequencer on the MPD232. ?


Installing the Mapping File

  1. Go to the Devices menu and select Device Setup...

  2. In the window that appears, click on the + in the upper left corner and select Generic Remote from the list.
  3. Once selected, click Import on the right side of the window.
  4. Navigate to the MPD226_232_Cubase XML file in the MPD2_Cubase folder that was download earlier. Please ensure that this folder has been unzipped first. Click Open.
  5. In the MIDI Input drop-down menu, find and select your MPD226 or MPD232 port (this may be labeled as Port A depending on your operating system).
  6. Click on Apply in the bottom right and click OK to finish and close the window.

You may notice that Bank C on the MPD232 was left unmapped. This is to allow users the space to personalize and make their own assignments, whether this is to more mixer functions or to a favorite EQ or other plugin.
