The MPK Road 88 starts with the default velocity curve set to "Linear." This is an equal response velocity to force ratio and a common starting point for new keyboards.

But, experienced players or players looking for a different feel may need a little more nuance and responsiveness out of their keybed. The velocity curve and sensitivity of the Road 88 keybed can be adjusted by sending simple sysex messages.

Where to start:

First, you'll need a sysex capable software to write and send sysex messages to your MPK 88. We recommend the following:

Once the software is downloaded and installed, connect your MPK Road 88 directly to a free USB port on your computer and power it on.

  1. Open MIDI Ox
  2. Go to Options > MIDI Devices...
  3. Choose the Road 88 under MIDI Outputs:
  4. Click OK.
  5. Go to View > Sysex... and this will open a new window.
  6. In the Command Window, copy and paste your sysex message from the list below.
  7. In the sysex window, choose Command Window > Send Sysex to send the message to the Road 88

Velocity Curve

The velocity curve can be adjusted by sending the following messages:

White key velocity curve:
F0 47 00 42 0A 00 01 XX F7

Black key velocity curve:
F0 47 00 42 0B 00 01 XX F7

Where the value XX is the curve type. Default is linear:

00 = Linear (default)
01 = Exp 1
02 = Exp 2
03 = Exp 3
04 = Log 1
05 = Log 2
06 = Log 3

Sensitivity

The overall sensitivity of the keys can also be adjusted with this message. Default is 50, which is the middle of the sensitivity spectrum:

White key sensitivity:
F0 47 00 42 0C 00 01 YY F7

Black key sensitivity:
F0 47 00 42 0C 00 01 YY F7

Where YY is a value from 00 to 64 in hex (Sensitivity range of 0 to 100). The higher the sensitivity value, the more sensitive the keybed will become.
