Akai MPD and MPK Series - Syncing With Pro Tools

The transport controls, Arpeggiator, and Note Repeat functions require that your controller be synced together with your DAW via MIDI. This guide walks through syncing your MPD or MPK with Pro Tools.

Enabling Transport Controls Via MMC

On The MPK/MPD
  1. Push the EDIT button.
     
  2. Push any of the 5 transport controls to select them as the parameter to be edited.
     
  3. Push down the ENTER button.
     
  4. Use the rotary knob to select MMC on the display.

 

In Pro Tools
  1. Select Setup > Peripherals.
     
  2. Select Machine Control.
     
  3. Select Enable under MIDI Machine Control Remote (Slave). Use ID 127.

Slaving The Arpeggiator and Note Repeat Functions to Pro Tools

On The MPK/MPD
  1. Press the GLOBAL button.
     
  2. Press the right arrow key until the display reads MIDI CLK.
     
  3. Use the rotary knob to select EXTERNAL.
     
  4. Hit the right arrow key until the display is onreach Page 10 and press ENTER to save settings.

 

In Pro Tools
  1. Select Setup > MIDI > MIDI beat Clock
     
  2. Check the box next to Enable MIDI Beat Clock For….
     
  3. Select the MPK/MPD from the list.

  4. Press OK.
     

The Arpeggiator and Note Repeat functions will now follow the tempo of the Pro Tools session. Note that the session must be either playing or recording in order to receive MIDI clock.
